A Love for Baking
My love for baking came at a very young age. I was the seventh child of nine. We were poor prairie farmers with lots of mouths to feed. So we mostly ate what we grew on the farm, except at Christmas time. This is when my mother went all out for the Christmas Eve dinner. Her specialty was German Apple Strudel. The girls in the family would gather the day before Christmas Eve and make traditional Apple Strudel. The dough was soft, warm and gooey. We would start pulling the dough until it was as thin as tissue paper. Each one of us had an ingredient to place on the thin dough. It was a thrilling for me to help create a beautiful and tasty piece of my heritage. I was hooked and started creating my own variations of my favourite dessert, and still make it to this very day.
