I was very close to my grandmother growing up and she used to tell me all the time that if things had been different in her life then she would have been a nurse. Instead she volunteered at the nearby retirement home where she painted nails, sang, played bingo and delivered snacks. She even went on to form a “Hillybilly Band” with the rest of the volunteers. My sister and I would spend our summers with her and helped her during the days she volunteered. We were even honourary band members! Seeing her give her time so selflessly, inspired me and is one of the reasons why I decided to become a nurse. She died early this year and I know that I had made her proud.
